Naomi Beckwith Awarded 2024 David C. Driskell Prize by High Museum of Art

Naomi Beckwith has been honored with the 2024 David C. Driskell Prize, an annual $50,000 award presented by Atlanta's High Museum of Art. The prize, established in 2005, recognizes exceptional contributions to African American art and art history. Beckwith serves as deputy director and Jennifer and David Stockman chief curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Museum, a position she assumed in 2018. Her previous curatorial work at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago included organizing Howardena Pindell's first survey exhibition and shows featuring artists like Leslie Hewitt, Jimmy Robert, and Yinka Shonibare. Beyond curation, Beckwith has extensively researched and published on Black identity and culture, examining the work of Arthur Jafa, Rashid Johnson, Howardena Pindell, Jimmy Robert, and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye. In a statement, Beckwith expressed being 'equal parts elated and humbled' to join the ranks of previous recipients, whom she described as mentors and inspirations. She emphasized her commitment to contributing to 'the most expansive art history imaginable.' The award ceremony is scheduled for April 26 at the High Museum of Art.
