Nanda Vigo: A Life Between Art, Design, and Architecture
Nanda Vigo (1936-2020) was an Italian artist, designer, and architect who navigated the male-dominated Gruppo Zero. Born and died in Milan, she traveled between Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and the US (San Francisco, Chicago), collaborating with figures like Gio Ponti, Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani, Heinz Mack, and Max Bill. She curated the seminal 1965 exhibition "Zero avant-garde" in Fontana's studio and participated in the Venice Biennale in 1972 and 1982. Her work spans "cronotopi"—objects that become environments—exploring light, space, and time. She collaborated with Enrico Astori and Driade in design, and had a solo exhibition at Palazzo Reale in 2019 and an intervention in the church of San Celso in 2018. Known for her rigorous yet free approach, she described herself as an "occult designer," launching projects into the air for others to realize. Her legacy includes the Casa ZERO and interiors with Vincenzo Agnetti, remembered in texts by Lisa Ponti and a 2015 exhibition at Spazio FMG. A proposed project for the Triennale's children's space—a revisited series of Enzo Mari's 16 animals as suspended luminous objects—remains unrealized.
