Nancy Honey's Retrospective at Claire de Rouen Explores Womanhood

exhibition · 2026-05-20

Nancy Honey, an American-born photographer now 78, recently exhibited at Claire de Rouen's new Shoreditch location, pulling together images from her vast archive spanning over four decades. The exhibition, curated by Dominic Bell, featured works from series including 'Entering the Masquerade' (portraits of girls aged 11–14) and 'Woman to Woman' (22 triptychs made between 1987 and 1990). Honey, who trained as a painter on the West Coast during the flower power era, moved to the UK and studied visual communication in Bath while raising young children. Her work, influenced by Julia Margaret Cameron and Nan Goldin, uses photography's immediacy to capture moments of girlhood and womanhood with tenderness and humor. The exhibition at 11A Kingsland Road is part of Claire de Rouen's 20th anniversary programming, continuing their partnership with Alaïa since 2024.
