Nancy Holt's Sun Tunnels Exhibition at Sprüth Magers Reveals Process Behind Iconic Earthwork
At Sprüth Magers in New York, 'Echoes & Evolutions: Nancy Holt’s Sun Tunnels' highlights the conceptual evolution of Holt's desert installation from 1973 to 1976. This exhibition features previously unseen drawings, collages, photographs, and two Studio Locators. The Sun Tunnels installation consists of four concrete cylinders situated in Utah's Great Basin Desert, designed to align with the sun during solstices, casting star constellations inside. Holt's three-year creative journey is captured through photographic documentation. The show addresses modern issues related to perception, ecology, and site-specific art. Holt, born in 1938, has a varied artistic practice, with recent solo exhibitions at the Wexner Center for the Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago, both in 2025. The exhibition will be on view until October 25, 2025.
