Nancy Gabriel and Julie Hillman Stage 'The Cultivated Eye' in a Manhattan Penthouse

Gallerist Nancy Gabriel and interior designer Julie Hillman have opened 'The Cultivated Eye,' an exhibition inside Gabriel's duplex penthouse at Sutton Tower on Manhattan's Upper East Side. The show explores collecting as an act of stewardship and connoisseurship, featuring a mix of rare furnishings, contemporary art, and historical pieces. Hillman, making her curatorial debut, assembled works by Daniel Buren, Sterling Ruby, Martin Barré, Louis Eisner, and Nadia Lee Cohen, alongside furniture by Jean Royère, Philippe Starck, Mario Ceroli, and others. Notable pieces include a resin console by Marie-Claude de Fouquières, a Philippe Starck table with Murano glass, and a Barbare Chair by Elizabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti. A monumental patchwork carpet from Nordic Knots unifies the living room. Loans from Dobrinka Salzman, Salon 94, and Dennis Freedman—including Renzo Mongiardino lamps and a Pierre Paulin desk—are on view. Aboriginal art from D'Lan Galleries and Galerie Lucas Ratton, including works by Sally Gabori, appears on the staircase. The exhibition is on view by appointment until November 30.
