Nam June Paik's Five Predictions at Tate London
A major retrospective of Nam June Paik (1932–2006), widely regarded as the father of video art, is on view at Tate Modern in London until February 9, 2020. The Korean artist experimented extensively with technology, using cameras, monitors, satellite connections, telephones, computers, and robotics. A video produced by the museum for the exhibition lists five of Paik's visionary predictions that anticipated contemporary realities: the internet (which he called the "electronic superhighway"), the widespread use of video as a creative tool, the global media system connecting the world through uninterrupted transmissions, the invention of the smartphone, and the ecological crisis—to which he proposed a balance between technological development and environmental protection. The exhibition highlights his 360-degree experimentation with technology.
