Nalini Malani Awarded 2023 Kyoto Prize in Art and Philosophy

Nalini Malani, an Indian artist recognized as a trailblazer in video art within her country, has been named the recipient of the 2023 Kyoto Prize in Art and Philosophy. The Inamori Foundation, which established the prize in 1984 to honor individuals advancing scientific, cultural, and spiritual understanding, made the announcement. Malani is celebrated for creating immersive, phantasmagorical environments through accessible mediums, and her work amplifies marginalized voices, positioning her as a globally active artist from the Global South who challenges Western-centric art narratives. Alongside Malani, the foundation also awarded Japanese scientist Ryuzo Yanagimachi the Kyoto Prize in Advanced Technology and American mathematician Elliott H. Lieb the Kyoto Prize in Basic Sciences. Each laureate will receive a diploma, a medal, and a 100-million-yen fund, with the award ceremony scheduled for November in Kyoto. The prize underscores Malani's significant impact on contemporary art trends that reevaluate traditional artistic hierarchies.
