Naiza Khan's Manora Field Notes at Pakistan Pavilion explores Karachi's maritime history for 2019 Venice Biennale
Naiza Khan showcases her project, Manora Field Notes, representing Pakistan at the 2019 Venice Biennale, located at Tanarte, Castello 2109/A, and Spazio Tana, Castello 2110-2111. The exhibition explores the maritime history of Karachi in two segments: a film installation named Sticky Rice and Other Stories, which features miniature boat models crafted by local artisans, and brass-cast maps accompanied by a sound piece inspired by the deserted Observatory on Manora Island. Khan highlights the similarities between Venice and Karachi, both historic port cities influenced by trade and geopolitical changes. She emphasizes labor, production, and colonial narratives through Karachi's sea heritage, including container ships and 15th-century European vessels. The artist notes the Pakistan Pavilion's proximity to an old arsenal that once built warships. Khan perceives Venice as a dual space for art and ideas, offering a platform for Pakistan’s cultural scene. She reflects on the significant impact of the 2015 Biennale under Okwui Enwezor, particularly regarding political themes. The Biennale is scheduled from 11 May to 24 November 2019.
