Nairy Baghramian Wins 2022 Nasher Prize, Misfits Series Exhibited at Nasher Sculpture Center

award · 2026-04-20

Nairy Baghramian, who was born in Isfahan, Iran in 1971 and moved to Berlin at the age of thirteen, is known for her sculptures that evoke human internal organs. Her installation, La Colonne Cassée, showcased at the 2008 Berlin Biennale, made a striking impact on the facade of the Neue Nationalgalerie. She critiques the transparency of modern architecture, asserting that "Modernity is heterosexual." In 2016, her piece Peeper confronted the notion of viewer voyeurism. The Misfits series, exhibited at Milan's Galleria d'Arte Moderna in 2021, included marble lozenges and aluminum versions, reflecting on limitations in public spaces. A 2022 Nasher Prize recipient, Baghramian's work from the Misfits series is currently displayed at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas until May 1.
