NABA opens new campus in Rome, expanding from Milan
NABA Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti is opening a new campus in Rome's Garbatella district, its first expansion beyond Milan. The Rome campus will launch in October with three-year programs in Multimedia Arts, Communication and Graphic Design, and Fashion Design, taught in Italian and English. The move is led by parent company Galileo Global Education. Marco Scotini, head of NABA's Visual Arts Department, says Rome was chosen for its complementarity to Milan and its potential for creative development in the former industrial area. The school plans to collaborate with local institutions, starting with MAXXI museum. NABA's Visual Arts and Curatorial Studies biennial program, founded in 2003, was the first in Italy to combine art and curating at an institutional level. Notable alumni include Danilo Correale, Chiara Fumai, Ian Tweedy, Beto Shwafaty, Stefano Serretta, Ruth Beraha, and The Cool Couple. Two alumni curated sections at the last Quadriennale. NABA has been recognized internationally, invited by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev to Documenta 13's educational program and by MIT to the Architecture Biennale. The school emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach and research-based art, with visiting professors including Hito Steyerl, Trinh T. Minh-ha, and Tim Rollins. Recent projects include collaborations at the Anren Biennale and Yinchuan Biennale in China.
