My Winnipeg: A Survey of Manitoba's Art Scene at La Maison Rouge

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Curated by artist Hervé Di Rosa, 'My Winnipeg' inaugurated a new cycle at La Maison Rouge – Fondation Antoine de Galbert in Paris, focusing on vibrant city art scenes. Di Rosa, inspired by filmmaker Guy Maddin and the Royal Art Lodge collective (including Marcel Dzama), proposed the exhibition to Antoine de Galbert and Paula Aisemberg. Together they traveled to Winnipeg, assisted by local art institutions like Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art, and gathered works from nearly eighty artists. Recurring themes include witchcraft, magic, fires, sexuality, and dreams. Notable works include Kent Monkman's diorama 'The Collapsing of Time and Space in an Everexpanding Universe' (2011), Marcel Dzama's 'On The Banks of the Red River' (2088), Guy Maddin's expressionist films, and Diana Thorneycroft's unsettling narratives using figurines against paintings by the Group of Seven (including Lawren Harris). The exhibition ran from June 23 to September 25, 2011, and later traveled to the Musée international des arts modestes (MIAM) in Sète (November 5, 2011 – May 20, 2012) and Plug In ICA in Winnipeg later in 2012.
