MVRDV, Diamond Schmitt, and Two Row Architect Unveil Temerty Building Design
The Temerty Building, a new health research and education center spanning 36,000 square meters, has been unveiled by the University of Toronto on its St. George Campus. This facility, designed collaboratively by MVRDV, Diamond Schmitt Architects, and Two Row Architect, will replace a section of the Medical Sciences Building from 1969. Approximately 60% of the building will focus on research, featuring wet and dry labs, as well as spaces for studying infectious and aquatic diseases. The ground floor includes a triple-height hall for events, adaptable walls for various functions, and areas for Elders and Knowledge Keepers alongside an Indigenous teaching garden. The building's façade combines glass and sandstone, drawing inspiration from Gothic architecture, with a goal of achieving climate positivity by 2050. Construction is set to commence in July 2026, following preparatory activities later this year. The design was initially presented in the 2018-2023 Academic Strategic Plan for Temerty Medicine.
