Muzeum Susch: New Contemporary Art Museum in Swiss Alps Opens January 2019
Muzeum Susch, a hybrid museum and laboratory founded by Polish entrepreneur and collector Grażyna Kulczyk, will open on January 2, 2019, in the remote Alpine village of Susch, Switzerland, population 220. The museum occupies a 12th-century former monastery that was later a brewery, restored by Swiss architects Chasper Schmidlin and Lukas Voellmy, who preserved the site's history and integrated a stream into the structure. The 1,500-square-meter space will host permanent and temporary exhibitions, an annual symposium, a gender research institute in collaboration with the Institut Kunst Basel, and residencies for artists, curators, and intellectuals. The inaugural show, curated by Kasia Redzisz, Senior Curator at Tate Liverpool, explores notions of femininity and gender with works by 30 international artists. Kulczyk, listed among Forbes' most influential people, has donated over $100 million to the Museum of Contemporary and Performance Arts in Warsaw (designed by Tadao Ando, opening late 2018) and contributes part of her 600-piece collection, including works by Roman Opalka, Antoni Tàpies, Anselm Kiefer, Joan Mitchell, and Andy Warhol. Muzeum Susch will feature site-specific installations by international artists responding to the Alpine landscape and its seasonal extremes.
