Mutti's 'House of Polpa' Vaulted Installation Uses 20,000 Tomato Cans at Milan Design Week 2026
At FuoriSalone 2026, Mutti unveils 'House of Polpa,' an impressive installation crafted from twenty thousand tomato cans, situated within the historic cloisters of the University of Milan. The structure, measuring 25 meters, consists of three cylindrical sections connected by a wooden walkway beneath the Portico Richini, as part of the INTERNI MATERIAE exhibition. Each can represents a year since the product's introduction in 1971, marking a total of fifty-five years. A unique flooring solution developed with Mapei incorporates resin derived from tomato skins. Designed for easy disassembly, visitors will be able to take cans home after the exhibition concludes on April 30, 2026. This installation emphasizes circularity and Mediterranean landscapes, aligning with Milan Design Week's theme of material innovation. It is located at Via Festa del Perdono 7 and will be open from April 20 to April 30, 2026.
