architecture-design · 2026-05-04

Several major museums are set to open globally in 2019. In Doha, the National Museum of Qatar, designed by Jean Nouvel, opens with 40,000 square meters of space across eleven galleries, focusing on Qatari history and identity. The building mimics a desert rose and incorporates the historic palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani. In Los Angeles, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop, debuts after a two-year delay, featuring immersive exhibitions, a permanent collection, and a retrospective of Hayao Miyazaki. New York's The Shed, a mobile structure by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Rockwell Group, opens on April 5 at Hudson Yards, offering multidisciplinary programming. The Bauhaus centenary is marked by new museums in Weimar (opening April 6, designed by Heike Hanada) and Dessau (opening September 8, by ddenda architects). Rio de Janeiro's Museum of Image and Sound, by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Indio da Costa Architects, is nearing completion on Copacabana Beach. In Hong Kong, M+ museum, designed by Herzog & de Meuron with TFP Farrells and Ove Arup, is under construction in the West Kowloon Cultural District, set to become one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary visual culture.
