Museums Embrace Rave Culture as Transformative Social Space

The Asian Art Museum in San Francisco hosted the 2025 exhibition "Rave into the Future: Art in Motion," featuring ten artists from the West Asian and North African diaspora who reinterpret dance floors as spaces of resistance. Notable works included Joe Namy's conductive copper dance floor, Yasmine Nasser Diaz's ongoing piece "For Your Eyes Only" (2021–ongoing), and Meriem Bennani's "Party on the CAPS" (2018–19). The event included live daytime disco sessions and a "Baby Rave." This exhibition follows Steve McQueen's sound installation in 2024 and Madrid's "Elements of Vogue" from 2018. The 2025 anthology "Writing on Raving" by McKenzie Wark and Destiny Brundidge explores how collective dance challenges societal hierarchies, while mentalKLINIK's installation highlighted museums' unease with joy.
