Museum of Sex Opens Miami Outpost During Art Week

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Museum of Sex will open a new branch in Miami's Allapattah district on December 1, 2023, coinciding with Miami Art Week. The 3,000-square-meter former warehouse, redesigned by Snøhetta, will house three galleries, retail spaces, and a bar. The institution, founded 20 years ago in New York, aims to explore the history and cultural significance of human sexuality. Executive director Daniel Gluck expressed excitement about bringing their vision to Miami's cultural scene. The opening features an updated version of the permanent installation 'Super Funland: Journey into the Erotic Carnival,' an immersive erotic carnival with art historical references. Two inaugural exhibitions include 'Desire Machines,' the first US solo show by Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama, presenting four nearly three-meter-tall 'sexy robot' sculptures, a bronze walking robot sculpture, and over 20 never-before-exhibited erotic paintings. The second exhibition, 'Modern Sex: 100 Years of Design and Decency,' examines the societal impact of restrictions on sexual health product design, marketing, and distribution through 500 artifacts, historical materials, and medical objects arranged by decade. Chief curator Ariel Plotek noted that the museum is more than doubling its exhibition space and expanding its audience and impact, adding a unique perspective on sexuality to Miami's world-class art scene.
