Museum of Making's 'Scale' exhibition explores industrial history through contemporary art
In May 2021, the Museum of Making in Derby reopened its doors, commemorating 300 years of manufacturing history. The first exhibition, titled 'Scale,' delves into the progression of scaling methods influenced by technological innovations. Notably, Derby Silk Mills, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the pioneering modern factory established in the 1700s. This exhibition showcases Slinkachu's photographic prints of intricately staged miniature scenes, along with various machinery and technological artifacts. The section 'The Art of Scale' addresses the difficulties artists encounter in mastering scale. In the 1760s, Joseph Wright partnered with cartographer Peter Perez Burdett to refine precise scaling techniques. Handmade models and prototypes of Rolls-Royce's Soar engine are also featured. 'Scale' is on display until 28 November, reflecting on industrial history's influence on modern technology.
