Museum of Contemporary Photography at 50: Reflecting on Institutional Power and Photographic History

The Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago is gearing up to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026 with a special exhibition titled 'MoCP at Fifty: Collecting Through the Decades,' running until May 16. Founded in 1976, the museum's impressive collection features over 18,000 works by more than 2,000 artists. This exhibition includes over 100 pieces displayed in reverse order, starting with acquisitions from 2016 to 2026. Artists like Carrie Mae Weems, Joel Sternfeld, and Barbara Crane are prominently featured. Chief Curator Karen Irvine points out that the collection reflects shifting cultural stories, while MoCP's projects delve into identity and tech changes, connecting it with global institutions such as The Photographers' Gallery and the International Center of Photography.
