Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego to Quadruple Gallery Space with $95M Expansion
The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) has announced a temporary closure to undergo a major expansion designed by Selldorf Architects. The project will quadruple the museum's exhibition space and cost $95 million, with $80 million raised through private donations. New construction will add two levels of galleries featuring vertical windows offering coastal views, a flexible multiusu gallery for public programs, and a new underground parking lot. The current north-side parking lot will be transformed into a public park, and new rooftop terraces will overlook the Pacific Ocean. MCASD, founded in 1941, holds over 4,700 post-1950 artworks. Director Kathryn Kanjo stated the expansion will double the campus size and quadruple gallery space. Board President Paul Jacobs called the museum a future cultural beacon for La Jolla and San Diego County. Donors have also contributed works by Francis Bacon, Helen Frankenthaler, Morris Louis, Joan Mitchell, Barnett Newman, and Andy Warhol.
