Museum of Asian Texans Opens with Exhibitions on Heritage as Living Practice

exhibition · 2026-05-04

In September 2025, the Museum of Asian Texans (MAT) was established by Stephanie Drenka to challenge the 'perpetual foreigner stereotype' and to present alternative perspectives on Asian American heritage. Among its inaugural exhibitions is 'Transient Recollections' (September 5–October 5, 2025) by Matthew Jones, which addresses environmental issues. 'Untitled Homeland' (October 17–November 15, 2025), curated by Kyla Gaganam, showcases artists from the South Asian diaspora. Christina Hanh's 'Offerings' (February 7–March 1, 2026) critiques generational sacrifice, while Jack Hein's 'Taste in Memory' (March 14–April 5, 2026) features unglazed porcelain sculptures. Drenka highlights the significance of art in understanding culture and history, aiming to uphold traditions and emphasize Asian American narratives.
