Museum guard claims 'Man with Red Beret' is by Piero della Francesca

opinion-review · 2026-05-05

Leonardo Franceschi, a guard at Venice's Museo Correr, has released an independent study claiming that the artwork 'Man with Red Beret' (also referred to as 'Gentleman with Red Beret') is attributed to Piero della Francesca. Previously, critics such as Fiocco, Mariacher, Muraro, and others have linked the piece to various artists, including Vittore Carpaccio and Giovanni Bellini. Franceschi, who graduated in Painting from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, initiated his research in 2010 after viewing Piero's 'Saint John the Evangelist' in New York and the 'Montefeltro Altarpiece' in Milan. He identified the landscape as the Church of San Donato near Urbino and noted similarities with Piero's works. His findings were published online in 2015 after discussions with former professor Gloria Vallese.
