Museum der Moderne Salzburg exhibition 'Folklore' interrogates nostalgia amid Austrian political shift

exhibition · 2026-04-20

The Museum der Moderne Salzburg launched the exhibition 'Folklore: A Controversy with Works from the Collections' shortly after the Freedom Party of Austria joined the coalition government. This exhibit features 50 pieces from 28 artists, delving into themes of national identity and nostalgia without merely rejecting the past. Highlights include a videotape of 'The Sound of Music,' David Hockney's illustrations for 'Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm' (1969), and Erwin Wurm's 'Self-Portrait as Pickles' (2008). Additionally, Kader Attia's 'Dispossession #2' (2013) addresses issues of looted artifacts, while Dan Graham's 'Rock My Religion' (1982–84) and Martha Rosler's 'Semiotics of the Kitchen' (1975) provide fresh takes on classic video art. The exhibition concluded on 15 April 2018 and was featured in ArtReview's January & February 2018 issue.
