Museu Lasar Segall launches online retrospective of Rossini Perez's archive

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The Museu Lasar Segall presents 'Arqueologia da Criação: Uma imersão no acervo-ateliê de Rossini Perez,' an online retrospective honoring the artist who died in March 2020 at age 89. Curated by Sabrina Moura, the exhibition offers immersive virtual galleries with audio, video, and images, accessible until July 1, 2021, at www.arqueologiadacriacao.org. Moura's research, which began in 2017, uncovered Perez's role in establishing a printmaking workshop at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes in Dakar, Senegal, during the 1970s. Born in 1931 in Macaíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Perez moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1942, studying under Ado Malagoli, Iberê Camargo, and Fayga Ostrower. He participated in the 1st Exposição Nacional de Arte Abstrata in 1953 in Petrópolis. During the 1960s, he lived in Paris among Brazilian avant-garde artists like Lygia Clark and Sérgio Camargo. From 1970 to 1990, he worked in Portugal, Senegal, and Mexico, setting up print workshops and exhibiting. He later taught in Brasília and at the MAM/RJ's printmaking atelier from 1983 to 1986. Perez made significant donations to institutions including the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes do Rio de Janeiro and the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo. A publication launching on June 10, 2021, will feature texts by Moura, Cláudia Rocha, Maria Luisa Távora, Juliana Maués, and Marisa Ribeiro, exploring new aspects of his work.
