Museu da Casa Brasileira to Relocate to Rino Levi's Olivo Gomes Residence in 2026

institutional · 2026-04-30

The Museu da Casa Brasileira, after over five decades at its Avenida Faria Lima location in São Paulo, will move to the Residência Olivo Gomes in São José dos Campos, a modernist masterpiece by architect Rino Levi. The 1,656-square-meter house, built in the 1950s for the president of Tecelagem Parahyba, features gardens by Roberto Burle Marx and mural interventions by Francisco Rebolo. Inauguration is scheduled for the first half of 2026. The move recontextualizes the museum's collection within a landmark of Brazilian modernism, transforming the institution into a monument where the architecture itself becomes an immersive lesson in the evolution of Brazilian habitat and material culture. During the transition, the museum has held itinerant exhibitions and partnerships with the Museu Paulista.
