Museomix debuts in four Italian museums for first time

digital · 2026-05-05

Museomix, a three-day hackathon-style event for museums, arrives in Italy for the first time, taking place simultaneously at four Italian museums and 13 other locations worldwide until November 13. Teams of six people—including communicators, designers, makers, programmers, collection experts, and cultural mediators—collaborate to create innovative mediation tools such as augmented reality, holograms, audio-video reproductions, Arduino platforms, and beacons, aiming to improve visitor experience and engage new audiences. The Italian edition involves Museo Tolomeo in Bologna, Museo Carlo Zauli in Faenza, Museo del Risorgimento e della Resistenza in Ferrara, and CAOS – Centro Arti Opificio Siri in Terni. Davide Baruzzi, president of BAM! Strategie Culturali and co-founder of the Italian Museomix community, stated that 78 'museomixer' from Italy and abroad will join local communities of about 50 active people per museum. The initiative is supported by IBC Emilia-Romagna and NEMO Network of European Museums Organization, following a 2015 conference organized by IBC as part of the Creative Museum European project. Museums remain open to the public during the event, and on the final day (Sunday 13, from 4 PM) admission is free for visitors to test the prototypes.
