Museo Ginori to Reopen in 2025 After Restoration, Collection Goes Online

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

The Museo Ginori in Sesto Fiorentino, closed since 2013 after the bankruptcy of the Richard-Ginori factory, will finally reopen to the public in early 2025. Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano approved restoration works starting May 2024, with a first lot of 1.9 million euros from the Interministerial Committee for Economic Planning and an additional 5.5 million from the Strategic Plan for Major Cultural Projects. The museum, founded in the mid-18th century alongside the Doccia porcelain manufactory, holds 10,000 artifacts including porcelain, maiolica, wax, and terracotta. In 2017, the state purchased the museum following efforts led by Tomaso Montanari, now president of the Fondazione Museo Archivio Richard Ginori della Manifattura di Doccia, established in 2019 by the Ministry of Culture, Tuscany Region, and Sesto Fiorentino municipality. Meanwhile, the foundation launched a new website accessible to visually and hearing-impaired users, created by Cantiere Creativo, featuring detailed technical sheets, a podcast series on the factory's history, and 300 drawings from the Gio Ponti archive. A major exhibition at Museo Poldi Pezzoli in Milan from October 25 will celebrate the Ginori-Milan connection with Giulio Richard.
