Museo Giancarlo Vitali Opens in Bellano with 560-Work Donation
The Museo Giancarlo Vitali has opened in Bellano, Lecco, dedicated to painter and engraver Giancarlo Vitali (1929–2018). The museum was made possible by a donation from the Vitali family to the Comune di Bellano and the Associazione ArchiViVitali, including the complete corpus of 560 engravings. Housed in the 18th-century Palazzo Lorla, the interior redesign by Vitali Studio features geometric movable walls. The museum is part of the BAC – Bellano Arte Cultura project, a 1.2 km itinerary of historical, natural, and cultural sites including the Orrido di Bellano, Cà del Diavol, Parco Lorla (reopening as a sculpture garden), San Nicolao Arte Contemporanea, the church of Santa Marta with Giovanni Angelo Del Maino's 16th-century wooden group, the church of Santi Nazaro e Celso, and the Museo del latte. Artistic direction is by Chiara Gatti, alongside artist Velasco Vitali. The exhibition displays 100 paintings across three ground-floor rooms arranged by analogy rather than chronology. Notable works include a 1955 portrait of Germana and a 1946 self-portrait. The garden features a mural by Velasco Vitali. The collection spans seventy years of painting and was supported by Fondazione Cariplo. The museum also functions as a study center.
