Museo di Schengen Reopens with Border-Crossing Exhibition by Migliore+Servetto
In Schengen, Luxembourg, the renewed Museo di Schengen opened in June 2025, designed by Italian studio Migliore+Servetto (Ico Migliore and Mara Servetto) in collaboration with Karmachina. The museum, housed in a 400-square-meter building restored by Forma Architects, reinterprets the concept of borders through 19 installations that blend analog and digital systems. Visitors encounter a central 'Cube of European Flags' featuring all EU member flags, dynamic lighting, and mirrored surfaces simulating constant human movement. The experience includes a 'Schengen passport' for registration, allowing visitors to enter the museum's memory and interact in three languages. The restored boat Prinzessin Marie-Astrid Europa, where the 1985 Schengen Agreement was signed, serves as a floating museum and part of the exhibition path. Migliore+Servetto also presented Texturia Mari, a floating museum concept inspired by Aldo Rossi's Teatro del Mondo, at the Venice Biennale within the Italian Pavilion and at the Gwangju Design Biennale 2025 (until November 2). The museum aims to increase awareness of border complexities without celebratory intent, addressing advantages, disadvantages, and current global issues like over 50 wars and 150 million displaced people.
