Museo di Capodimonte launches virtual exhibition of Luca Giordano

exhibition · 2026-04-27

On April 5, 2020, the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte in Naples inaugurated a virtual exhibition titled "Luca Giordano, dalla Natura alla Pittura," curated by Stefano Causa and Patrizia Piscitello. The online opening, lasting three days until April 7, presents masterpieces of the 17th-century Neapolitan painter Luca Giordano (1634-1705), accompanied by texts and contributions from the curators. The exhibition was conceived by museum director Sylvain Bellenger and was previously shown at the Petit Palais in Paris. It is part of the ministerial initiative "L'Italia chiamò – Capodimonte oggi racconta." On April 6, Bellenger's text was released alongside a video by Carmine Romano, head of the digitalization project, revealing key works with set design by architect Roberto Cremascoli. On April 7, co-curator Patrizia Piscitello and art historian Alessandra Rullo traced the historical journey of Giordano's paintings from Neapolitan churches to the museum, spanning centuries marked by wars, dynastic changes, and natural disasters. All materials are shared on the museum's YouTube channel and social media. Curator Stefano Causa, professor of Modern and Contemporary Art History at the University of Suor Orsola Benincasa in Naples, described Giordano as a painter who reinvented Roman Baroque in an aggressive, unleashed version, drawing from Rubens, Cortona, Bernini, Titian, and Veronese, and who expanded subject choices beyond the frame.
