Museo delle Civiltà Opens Sala Guattari with Neanderthal Lab

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Museo delle Civiltà in Rome has inaugurated a new exhibition space, Sala Guattari, with the debut of 'Laboratorio Neanderthal. Le scoperte di Grotta Guattari'. The project permanently displays Neanderthal artifacts discovered since 1939 in Grotta Guattari, San Felice Circeo, visible until January 5, 2026. Recent archaeological findings that update knowledge on Neanderthals and their environment are presented alongside historically known specimens. The multimedia installation, designed by Studio Azzurro under the artistic direction of Leonardo Sangiorgi and Giuseppe Carmosino and curated by Maria Grazia Filetici and Andrea Viliani, features immersive and interactive technologies such as a 'Table of Gestures' and a virtual tour of the cave. The space is conceived as a 'space-time' where visual, sound, and light languages guide visitors through the museum's prehistoric and protohistoric collections. The initiative also launches a program of events in 2026 celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Regio Museo Preistorico Etnografico by Luigi Pigorini, reaffirming the museum's historical vocation as an institution dedicated to prehistory and protohistory. The project is part of a broader update of the museum, focusing on accessibility and multiple modes of fruition.
