Museo delle Civiltà in Rome Reopens with Dynamic, Pluralistic Vision

institutional · 2026-04-27

The Museo delle Civiltà in Rome, which opened its doors in 2016, has resumed operations under the leadership of director Andrea Viliani, emphasizing themes of diversity and conversation. Covering an area of 80,000 square meters, the museum holds a staggering 2 million items, with 90% currently in storage. Its collections include those from the Museo Nazionale Preistorico Etnografico (established in 1876), Museo Nazionale di Arte Orientale (1957), Museo Nazionale dell'Alto Medioevo (1967), and the previous Museo Africano. Visitors can now enter through two newly renovated access points at the Palazzo delle Scienze and Palazzo delle Tradizioni Popolari, originally updated for the 1942 Esposizione Universale di Roma. The museum's latest exhibition, 'Preistoria? Storie dell'Antropocene,' showcases over 150,000 artifacts, while contemporary artists like Bruna Esposito and Maria Alves enhance its offerings. Plans for temporary exhibitions abroad include showcasing Neapolitan nativity scenes in Prague.
