Museo della Ceramica opens in Nuoro, Sardinia
The Museo della Ceramica opened on July 20, 2023 in Nuoro, Sardinia, housed in the three-story Casa Chironi, a late 19th-century building owned by jurist Giampietro Chironi. The property was sold to the Municipality of Nuoro in 2002 and granted to the Istituto Superiore Regionale Etnografico della Sardegna (I.S.R.E.) in 2003, which oversaw its conservation and restoration. The museum's exhibition, designed by architect Antonello Cuccu, showcases 20th-century Sardinian ceramic artists including Francesco Ciusa, Salvatore Fancello, Federico Melis, and Edina Altara, alongside everyday utensils, plates, and jugs that trace the island's ceramic tradition. I.S.R.E. president Stefano Lavra noted that Sardinian ceramics have ancient roots, evolving from daily-use items to decorated pieces through skilled artisans. The museum aims to enrich the region's artistic offerings and strengthen Sardinia's economic fabric, according to culture councilor Andrea Biancareddu. It complements the MAN – Museo d’Arte della Provincia di Nuoro as part of a broader cultural network for the city.
