Museo del Precinema in Padua: A Wunderkammer of Optical Wonders
The Museo del Precinema in Padua, founded in 1998 in collaboration with the city's cultural department, is a unique museum dedicated to pre-cinema optical devices. Housed in the 15th-century Palazzo Angeli in Prato della Valle, the museum showcases the Minici Zotti Collection, which includes thousands of hand-painted glass slides for magic lanterns, stereoscopes, and other optical instruments from the 18th and 19th centuries. The collection also features a reconstruction of Canaletto's camera obscura, a Javanese shadow theatre, and a theatre of the Chat Noir from Paris. Visitors can experience active demonstrations with original magic lanterns. The museum is managed by Laura Minici Zotti, a curator, and a trainee, and receives funding from the Comune di Padova. Despite limited exhibition space, the museum attracts experts, school groups, and international visitors. Future plans include more magic lantern projections and collaborations with other museums.
