Museo del Prado Launches 'Una obra, una historia' with José Aparicio's 'El año del hambre en Madrid'

exhibition · 2026-04-29

The Museo del Prado in Madrid has introduced 'Una obra, una historia' (One Work, One Story), drawing inspiration from Umberto Eco. The inaugural chapter, overseen by curators Carlos G. Navarro and Celia Guilarte, showcases José Aparicio's artwork 'El año del hambre en Madrid' (1818), which measures 315 x 437 cm. This piece illustrates the famine in Madrid during 1811-1812, portraying gaunt figures rejecting bread offered by French soldiers, with the phrase 'NADA SIN FERNANDO' included. Although it was initially honored in 1819, its reputation waned after 1872, leading to its relocation to the Ministry of Public Works in 1874. Eventually, it found its way to the Museo de Arte Moderno in 1898 and the Museo de Historia de Madrid in 1927. The exhibition also features works by Goya and various critiques.
