Museo del Prado 2020: new narratives, feminist art, and El Greco
The Museo del Prado in Madrid has announced its 2020 exhibition program, shifting focus from its bicentennial to its permanent collection. Director Miguel Falomir stated the goal is to offer new ways to approach the museum and broaden cultural horizons beyond a Eurocentric view. Highlights include the installation 'Prado 200' in the basement, a new display of 52 classical sculptures in the Galleria Jonica, and the permanent reinstallation of Bosch's panels on modern supports. Temporary exhibitions include 'Invited' on the role of women in Spanish art (19th-20th centuries), 'Tornaviaje' on artistic relations between Spain and the New World, a reconstruction of Annibale Carracci's frescoes from the Cappella Herrera, the first exhibition on Marinus van Reymerswale, William Blake's illustrations for the Divine Comedy, and 'Mythological Passions' featuring Titian's six 'poesie' for Philip II. El Greco works will be displayed as invited pieces. For the Raphael quincentenary, the Prado will restore a copy of the Transfiguration and lend works to Rome and London.
