Museo de Bellas Artes de Valencia opens two new rooms for 20th-century Spanish painting

exhibition · 2026-04-22

The Museo de Bellas Artes de Valencia has inaugurated two new galleries dedicated to 20th-century Spanish painting on the third floor of the Pérez Castiel building. Director Pablo González Tornel highlighted that works by Gutiérrez Solana and Antonio Fillol offer a critical view of Spain in 1900, while pieces by María Blanchard and Julio González connect Spain with the Parisian avant-garde. The rooms display 28 paintings, including eight recent acquisitions by the Generalitat Valenciana for public heritage, shown for the first time after restoration. Notable new acquisitions include Carnaval en las Ventas by Gutiérrez Solana, La hija pródiga by Carlos Vázquez Úbeda, a portrait of María Teresa Llavallol de Atucha by Ignacio Zuloaga, Mujer con su bebé en el campo by Julio González, a portrait of José Pereira da Graça Aranha by Daniel Vázquez Díaz, a portrait of Miguel de Unamuno by Juan de Echevarría, Retrato femenino by Pere Pruna, and El joven torero by Emilio Grau Sala. Additionally, María Blanchard's La fillette à la soupe, acquired in 2025 by the Ministry of Culture, and Retrato de Larrauri by Enrique Albizu, donated by his family last year, are exhibited for the first time. The opening completes the museographic discourse of the Pérez Castiel building's exhibition galleries, which display 19th- and 20th-century collections.
