Museo Archeologico Marcello Gigante reopens in Buccino, Campania

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-05

After a year of renovations, the Museo Archeologico Marcello Gigante in Buccino, Campania, has reopened. Housed in the former convent of the Eremitani di Sant'Agostino, the national museum spans 1,600 square meters across four levels. Its collection of 5,000 pieces includes the famous Tomba degli Ori, a 3rd-century BC chamber tomb known as 'the princess's tomb' for its rich grave goods: black-glazed painted pottery, bronze vessels, a strigil, tweezers, boxes, a bronze and silver makeup set, earrings, a bracelet, rings, fibulae, and a lanceolate-pendant necklace. Other highlights include hand-decorated vases, soldier armaments, and mosaics from the ancient city of Volcei. The surrounding Urban Archaeological Park was created after the 1980 earthquake unearthed buried treasures. The museum aims to attract summer tourists visiting the nearby Cilento beaches.
