institutional · 2026-04-26

The Museo Archeologico dell’Alto Adige in Bolzano has published an international call for a scientific curator responsible for the conservation of Ötzi, the 5,300-year-old Iceman mummy. Director Elisabeth Vallazza described the requirements as “stringent and uncommon.” The position, starting autumn 2024, involves conservation, research, and communication duties. Candidates must have a four-year degree in natural sciences with specialization in paleopathology, bioarchaeology, or mummy research, plus advanced project management and lab experience. Fluency in Italian, German, and English is required. The mummy has been housed since 1998 in a specially designed cold cell at -6°C and 99% humidity, visible to the public. The contract is fixed-term for eleven months (38 hours/week, minimum €2,500 gross), renewable. Applications are due by August 31, 2024. The museum recently appointed Christian Greco, director of the Museo Egizio in Turin, as president of its scientific committee.
