Musei Capitolini launches Visea app for Tommaso Laureti frescoes

digital · 2026-04-27

The Musei Capitolini in Rome have launched Visea, a multimedia application that allows visitors to explore the fresco cycle by Tommaso Laureti in the Sala dei Capitani of the Palazzo dei Conservatori. Painted between 1587 and 1594, the frescoes depict episodes from early Republican Rome as recounted by Livy in Ab Urbe Condita, including the Justice of Brutus, Horatius Cocles at the Sublician Bridge, Mucius Scaevola before Porsenna, and the Battle of Lake Regillus. The app reveals the chronological sequence of execution, painting groups, and technical methods used by the artist, from cartoon to plaster, as well as his revisions. Installed on a touch-less totem (designed with Covid-19 in mind), visitors activate it by moving their index finger without contact. The project aims to deepen understanding of the mural cycle through dynamic animation of images and text, covering execution techniques and detailed information about the depicted figures.
