Musée des Plans-Reliefs: France in Miniature at Paris

exhibition · 2026-07-31

The Musée des Plans-Reliefs in Paris, housed within the Hôtel des Invalides, offers a unique collection of large-scale models of fortified cities, created between the 17th and 19th centuries. Originally designed as strategic military tools for Louis XIV and his engineers, these models allowed the planning of sieges, fortifications, and campaigns without leaving the court. The collection, initiated by Louvois, Secretary of State for War under Louis XIV, comprises about a hundred plans-reliefs, with around thirty currently on display in a vast, naturally lit gallery. The museum was inaugurated in 1943. The models, made with wood, paper, silk, dyed sand, and metal threads, depict details such as bastions, moats, houses, mills, ports, trees, and vines with astonishing precision, at a scale of approximately 1/600. Notable examples include models of Mont-Saint-Michel, Bayonne, and Toulon. Since the 1980s, models of fifteen northern strongholds, including Lille, have been deposited at the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille following a dispute between the state and the city of Lille. The collection is classified as a historic monument, showcasing the exceptional skill of French military engineers. The museum is located at 129 Rue de Grenelle, 75007 Paris, and offers free entry every July 14th.
