Musée des Arts Forains in Paris: A Journey into Belle Époque Festivities

The Musée des Arts Forains, located in the former wine warehouses of Bercy in Paris, offers a unique glimpse into 19th-century popular entertainment. Founded by passionate collector Jean-Paul Favand over 20 years ago, the museum houses hundreds of authentic fairground objects across three spaces: the museum itself, the Théâtre du Merveilleux, and the Salons Vénitiens. Visitors can actively engage with the exhibits, including a 19th-century velocipede carousel that can reach speeds up to 30 km/h, a reconstruction of the Rialto Bridge, and games like waiter races and shooting galleries. The museum is housed in historic buildings from 1896, classified as monuments historiques, featuring meulière stone, vaulted bricks, and metal frameworks by a student of Victor Baltard. Guided tours are required, costing 21 euros, and must be booked at least three weeks in advance, with visits primarily on Wednesdays and weekends, and daily during school holidays. The museum also opens for the European Heritage Days and hosts the annual Festival du Merveilleux at the end of the year, featuring acrobats, jugglers, and musicians for about ten days. The venue is also available for private and corporate events. The museum is part of a summer series by Beaux Arts magazine highlighting France's most unusual museums.
