Murray Fredericks' Vanity project at Hamiltons Gallery
Australian photographer Murray Fredericks (born 1970 in Sydney) has been working since 2003 at Lake Eyre, the world's largest salt lake located 15 kilometers below sea level in Central Australia's deserts. In this silent landscape where sky and water merge, he brings large mirrors and a camera to create minimalist, intense images. His Vanity series is documented in a behind-the-scenes video where Fredericks states: 'the mirror does not reflect our image, but is positioned to shift the gaze outward, away from ourselves, toward the environment, favoring interaction with light, color, and space.' A selection of these photographs is on view at Hamiltons Gallery in London in the exhibition Salt:Vanity, running until June 14, 2017.
