Muriel Rodolosse's Masked Paintings on Plexiglas

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Muriel Rodolosse has been painting on Plexiglas for over a decade, creating scenes where characters wear animal masks. Her work blends pseudo-childlike imagery with feminist critique, exploring gender hybridization and the refusal of taxonomy. She uses a unique technique: painting on both sides of the Plexiglas, working with her fingers to avoid transparency. Key works include 'no Taxinomi(e)' (2006), which references Monique Wittig's 'The Straight Mind' and Beatriz Preciado's 'Contra-Sexual Manifesto', and 'Ancora!' (2007), a large 550 x 617 cm painting composed of twelve parts. Her exhibition at the Centre d'art de la chapelle Saint-Jacques in Saint-Gaudens (2007) centered on this single painting, accompanied by wall drawings and a video made in Burano, Venice. In 'haaa…Dada!' (2008), she references the Dada movement and depicts a masked man riding a three-legged lamb amidst architectural elements like Rem Koolhaas's Villa Dall'Ava. Recent drawings (2010) reference Bruce Nauman's 'Going Around The Corner Piece' (1970). Rodolosse will exhibit in May at Chamalot-résidences d'artistes in Corrèze and at Versteckt, Rudi-Dutschke Strasse 18, Berlin from April 28 to May 29. She lives and works in Bordeaux.
