Murano Glass in Your Living Room via Augmented Reality

digital · 2026-04-27

Vaporetto, a company founded by Enrico Trabacchin, has launched an augmented reality system to promote Murano glass products. The technology, accessible via website, Facebook, or Instagram without an app, allows users to visualize glass objects in their own homes using a smartphone camera. This initiative aims to sustain the centuries-old Murano glassmaking tradition amid the collapse of tourism due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The system, previously used by IKEA and in the art world, is applied here for the first time to glass design. Vaporetto's new collection by Cortella&Ballarin includes about forty items such as glasses, vases, Christmas ornaments, and a glass rose, referencing the Venetian "Festa del bocolo." Trabacchin notes the difficulty of implementing AR with glass but claims the result is surprisingly effective.
