Mural honoring Stone Roses bassist Mani completed in Failsworth

artist · 2026-05-12

A massive mural honoring Gary 'Mani' Mounfield, the bassist for The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, has been unveiled on the La Fardy Pub’s exterior on Oldham Road in Failsworth, where he grew up. Created by street artist Pic.One.Art over the span of 11 days, the artwork showcases a joyful portrait alongside an image of Mani playing his bass guitar. Mani passed away at 63 in November due to emphysema complications. Funding for the mural came from a crowdfunding initiative led by GRIT art studios, which also supports The Maggie's Centre cancer charity that aided Mani's wife, Imelda. His brother, Greg Mounfield, praised the mural as 'amazing,' noting visitors from all over the UK. The concept was inspired by a tribute from Ian Brown at Mani's January funeral at Manchester Cathedral, where a gold statue was suggested. GRIT co-founder John McCaulay remarked that the mural represents 'by the people, for the people.'
