Munro Galloway's 'Belief System' Exhibition at Soloway Gallery Explores Brain Imagery Through Mixed Media

Munro Galloway presented his solo exhibition 'Belief System' at Soloway Gallery in Brooklyn from September 14 through October 19, 2014. The show featured a diverse range of works including oil and acrylic canvases, inkjet prints, drawings, and artist's books, all exploring brain imagery and material experimentation. Galloway displayed three canvases on a custom-built low shelf and arranged drawings on another purpose-built shelf, interspersed with books he had created over several years. Key works included '65" x 50" (Lean Over Fat)' (2014), an abstract painting with bright yellow squares and lines that references oil painting techniques by reversing the traditional 'fat over lean' rule. Multiple 'Brain Drawing' works (2014) depicted brain slices on found papers like color charts, takeout menus, and exhibition flyers, using ink, gouache, and collage. '64" x 48" (Nervous System)' (2014) combined inkjet-printed color charts with painted canvases, while '66.5" x 50.5"' (2014) featured a monoprint that resembled a malfunctioning printer output. The artist's book 'Vessel States' (2009) incorporated altered art catalogues with paper cutouts over images. Galloway's approach created intricate connections between different media, with drawings influencing paintings and prints deriving from canvases, establishing a non-linear narrative system that explored the interplay between revelation and mystery in artistic creation.
