Munemasa Takahashi's Tsunami Photo Recovery Project Returns 300,000 Images by 2014
After witnessing the devastation of the 2011 tsunami, photographer Munemasa Takahashi felt a profound sense of helplessness and subsequently created the bilingual book "Tsunami, Photographs and Then," focusing on the Memory Salvage and Lost & Found initiatives. Eight days after the disaster, he reached out to Professor Kuniomi Shibata, who was at the helm of Memory Salvage with FUJIFILM Corporation. Volunteers from Otsuma Women's University faced difficulties due to limited electricity and hazardous conditions. Between 20 and 80 volunteers worked to clean and digitize photographs, assembling albums with three distinct cover images for easy identification. By 2014, over 300,000 photos had been returned, while severely damaged ones were placed in a "Hopeless Box." The Lost & Found Project showcased recovered images across Japan, Australia, and the U.S., sparking ethical debates regarding their public exhibition and providing valuable historical context.
