Munch's 100 Works to Tour Milan and Rome in Major Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-26

A major Edvard Munch exhibition, titled "Munch. Il grido interiore," will open at Palazzo Reale in Milan in September 2024 and move to Palazzo Bonaparte in Rome in January 2025. Organized by Arthemisia and promoted by the Municipality of Milan's Culture Department, the show features over 100 works on loan from the Munch Museum in Oslo, including paintings, notebooks, photographs, and films. Curated by Costantino D'Orazio and Patricia G. Berman, the exhibition explores both the artist's public persona and private life, with a section dedicated to his muse Tulla Larsen. The Munch Museum's director Tone Hansen highlighted Munch's ability to convey emotions through color, while Domenico Piraina, director of Culture for the Municipality of Milan, called Munch a father of contemporary art. The exhibition marks the 25th anniversary of Arthemisia and is the first Munch show in Milan in 40 years and in Rome in 10 years.
