Multispecies Architecture: Designing for Nonhuman Residents

Architecture is increasingly accommodating nonhuman residents. The School of Science and Biodiversity in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, designed by ChartierDalix in 2014, boasts a concrete facade with ledges that support 345 species. In 2024, i29 and Namo Architecture's Buitenverblijf Nest, a stilted vacation home for birds and bats, will be completed in the Netherlands. BIG's Biosphere at Treehotel in Harads, Sweden, features 350 birdhouses, created in collaboration with ornithologist Ulf Öhman, and was finished in 2022. Andrés Jaque's Rambla Climate-House in Molina de Segura, Spain, also completed in 2022, revitalizes a ravine ecosystem using rainwater. Jaque's Reggio School in Madrid (2022) promotes biodiversity with cork. MVRDV's De Oosterlingen in Amsterdam and Henning Larsen's Fælledby in Copenhagen (2020, ongoing) are both designed with ecological aspects for wildlife.
